The turbulent interstellar medium of a high-redshift galaxy in the early Universe, only a few hundred million years after the Big Bang. The color shows gas column density, together with the light emitted by stars. Rapid star formation leads to large numbers of supernovae, that collectively produce bubble-like features in the gas, and drive large-scale outflows away from the galaxy, with a stellar mass of roughly 100,000 times the mass of our sun (residing within a dark matter halo of mass roughly 1,000,000,000 solar masses), shown here at redshift z=6.9 (age of the universe 780 Myr). The scale of the image is roughly 2 kilo-parsecs across.
