space-time density fluctuations

A one-dimensional simulation of hydrodynamical supersonic turbulence, showing signatures of intermittency. Here the evolution of the logarithm of the overdensity is visualized as a function of space (x-axes) and time (y-axes). Time progress from the initial condition, at the bottom, to twice the crossing time, at the top. Under-dense regions are visible in blue, average density in black, and over-dense in red. From left to right, four different experiments are shown: a single shock, two colliding shocks, two shocks with constant driving, and many overlapping shocks with constant driving.
