space-time turbulence

Numerical simulations of one-dimensional "turbulence" for an isothermal, inviscid fluid. Here a Mach number M=4 calculation explores the development of high-density structures composed of strong shocks, where shocks are driven on a scale of 1/1000 relative to the domain size. The visualization shows a space-time diagram of fluid density, with time on the y-axis and increasing upwards. The spatial coordinate is represented by the x-axis. As time progresses, the system quickly establishes a network of self-similar interacting and expanding shocks.

Methods: 2nd order finite-volume (Godunov) method on a 1D cartesian grid
