binary neutron star merger

A general relativistic (GR) magnetohydrodynamical (MHD) binary neutron star merger simulation. The tree panels show 20ms, 60ms, and 93ms after the merger itself, with the remnant object at the center. To provide a reference scale, the cyan sphere has a radius of 10 km, and is placed at the remnant center of mass. This visualization shows streamlines of the magnetic field line structure close to the remnant core, where color encodes magnetic field strength from weaker (yellow) to stronger (purple). The specific field lines shown are chosen with an algorithm which produces a balanced distribution of field lines in the different parts of the system, despite strongly varying strengths on both large and small scales.
